Er hat sich einem bösen Drachen gestellt, eine wunderschöne Prinzessin beschützt und das Königreich der Schwiegereltern gerettet. Kann es da überhaupt noch eine neue Herausforderung für einen Oger geben? Nun, für Shrek heißt das neueste Abenteuer, ein gezähmtes Leben im Kreise seiner Familie zu führen. Anstatt wie früher Dorfbewohner zu erschrecken, gibt sich Shrek nach anfänglichem Zögern damit zufrieden, Autogramme auf Mistgabeln zu geben. Doch tief in ihm ist noch das ursprüngliche Brüllen der Bestie und drängt nach draußen. Getrieben von dem Wunsch, sich wieder wie ein richtiger Oger zu fühlen, lässt er sich von dem gewieften Rumpelstilzchen zu einem folgenschweren Pakt überreden. Auf einmal findet sich Shrek in einer eigenartig verdrehten Version des Märchenlandes "Weit, weit, weg" wieder: Dort werden Oger gejagt, Rumpelstilzchen ist der König und Shrek hat seine geliebte Fiona niemals kennengelernt. Nun muss er schleunigst das selbst verschuldete Unheil abwenden, wenn er seine Freunde retten, seine Welt wieder in ihren ursprünglichen Zustand und seine große grüne Liebe Fiona wieder in den Armen halten will.
